FAQ

How much is a Banfield wellness plan per month?
Banfield says Optimum Wellness Plans start at $26.95 a month, average about $52 a month, and exceed $100 a month for the most comprehensive tiers. The exact price depends on the tier, your pet’s species and age, and your region.
Does Banfield still charge an enrollment fee?
Not for Optimum Wellness Plans. Banfield’s plan page, updated 9 September 2026, says there is no upfront enrollment fee. Some reviews, including 2026 ones, still quote $59.95–$76.95, which appears to predate the change.
How much does the Banfield Access Plan cost?
The Access Plan costs $15.95 to $37.95 a month depending on your region. It includes unlimited office visits, two comprehensive exams a year, an annual heartworm test, 24/7 Pet Chat and 5% off most products and services, but not vaccinations.
Can you cancel a Banfield wellness plan early?
Plans run for a year. If you cancel early, Banfield says you may be responsible for the difference between the retail cost of the services you already used and the payments you made. Third-party guides report that cancellation has to be done by phone or email, not online.
Is a Banfield wellness plan pet insurance?
No. Banfield states that Optimum Wellness Plans are not insurance. They prepay routine care at Banfield hospitals and do not cover accidents or illness at other vets.

Banfield sells two kinds of plan: the Optimum Wellness Plans (OWP), which bundle a year of preventive care, and the newer, cheaper Access Plan. Banfield only shows a tier’s price after you enter your pet and zip code, so several figures below are third-party quotes, each with its date (see how we check our numbers).

How much does a Banfield wellness plan cost per month?

Banfield’s own figures: Optimum Wellness Plans start at $26.95 a month, average about $52 a month, and go past $100 a month for the most comprehensive tiers. There is no upfront enrollment fee. You pay for the year in full or in 12 interest-free monthly payments.

The most complete 2026 figures for real quotes come from NerdWallet, which priced the base plan for a 2-year-old pet in eight cities (May 2026):

CityDog, per monthCat, per month
Jacksonville, FL$43$36
Grand Rapids, MI$45$38
Denver, CO$48$40
Katy, TX$50$40
Jersey City, NJ$55$46
New York, NY$55$46
Seattle, WA$55$46
Los Angeles, CA$58$46

For puppies and kittens, ConsumerAffairs (August 2026) quotes Early Care at $58.95 a month and Early Care Plus at $73.95. Treat all of these as examples rather than a rate card. Your quote depends on your pet’s age and your hospital.

How much do the tiers differ?

Hepper ran quotes through Banfield’s quote tool in January 2026. They show the gap between tiers, and between regions for the same pet:

TierDog, West CoastDog, East/MidwestCat (10 yrs), West CoastCat, Midwest
Active Care$42.95$33.95$35.95$26.95
Active Care Plus$56.95$44.95$53.95$39.95
Special Care$72.95$56.95$63.95$47.95

West Coast plans ran about 25% higher. Banfield’s regular price lists show the same pattern, with Southern California office visits 28% above Florida. Other chains’ prices are in our pet service price guides.

What does each Optimum Wellness Plan include?

According to Banfield, every tier includes the same core:

  • Unlimited office visits
  • Two comprehensive physical exams a year
  • Routine vaccines
  • Diagnostic testing and fecal exams
  • 24/7 Pet Chat with a vet team (in most states)
  • Nutrition coaching
  • A discount of 5–15% on services outside the plan, depending on tier

The tiers add more on top:

TierWho it’s forWhat it adds
Early CarePuppies and kittens in their first yearPuppy/kitten vaccine series, extra fecal exams and dewormings
Early Care PlusSameAdds the spay or neuter surgery and a larger discount
Active CareHealthy adults, 1 year+Blood work, heartworm and tick-borne disease test, 5% discount
Active Care PlusSameAdds a professional dental cleaning, with anesthesia and pre-anesthetic bloodwork
Special CarePets with chronic conditionsAdds diagnostics for ongoing conditions
Senior Care / Senior Care PlusOlder petsThyroid, kidney, heart and blood-pressure screening; Plus adds dental

The “Plus” tiers carry the expensive items. A spay or a dental cleaning is the single most expensive routine service at Banfield; a dog spay alone costs $469.95–$699.95 at list price.

What is the Banfield Access Plan?

The Access Plan is Banfield’s budget option. It launched around October 2025 and costs $15.95 to $37.95 a month, depending on region. It includes unlimited office visits, two comprehensive exams a year, an annual heartworm test, 24/7 Pet Chat and 5% off most products and services.

It does not include vaccinations. You pay for every vaccine at list price, and at Banfield rabies alone is $28.41–$32.09.

Is a Banfield wellness plan the same as pet insurance?

No. A wellness plan prepays predictable, routine care at Banfield. Pet insurance reimburses you for accidents and illness at almost any vet, and usually excludes routine care. Many owners who want both buy insurance and pay routine costs out of pocket.

Is a Banfield wellness plan worth it?

That depends almost entirely on whether you’d use the expensive items. The arithmetic below uses Banfield’s own list prices.

When does the Access Plan pay off?

Its main value is office visits, which cost $74.95–$95.95 each at list price. At the bottom of the range, $15.95 a month ($191.40 a year) pays for itself after about 3 office visits at Orlando prices. At the top, $37.95 a month ($455.40 a year) takes about 5 visits at Los Angeles prices. A healthy adult pet that sees the vet twice a year probably won’t get there.

When does Active Care Plus pay off for a dog?

Hepper’s January 2026 quotes put it at $44.95 a month in the East and Midwest ($539.40 a year) and $56.95 on the West Coast ($683.40 a year). Priced separately, the big items it covers cost:

ServiceOrlando listLos Angeles list
Dental cleaning$424.95$500.95
Two office visits$149.90$187.90
Rabies + DAPP + Bordetella$102.59$114.47
Total$677.44$803.32

In both regions that’s more than a year of the plan, before the bloodwork, heartworm test and fecal exams it also includes. If your dog gets its annual dental cleaning, the Plus tier pays for itself. If you’d skip the cleaning, it doesn’t.

How hard is it to cancel a Banfield plan?

Plans are annual and renew automatically each year if you pay monthly by AutoPay. Banfield’s terms say that if you cancel early, you may owe the difference between the retail cost of services you’ve already used and the payments you’ve made. Third-party guides report you can’t cancel online; it’s done by phone or by email to the wellness plan team.

In practice, cancelling early after using the dental cleaning or a spay can leave a bill of several hundred dollars. That’s the same cleaning that made the Plus tier worth buying in the table above. For a dog that stays at the same Banfield and gets its cleaning every year, the plan beats paying list price. For an owner who isn’t sure the dog will stay, the cleaning is the saving and also the thing you’d owe for if you left.
