FAQ

How much are Petco training classes?
Petco’s Puppy, Beginner, Fundamentals and Advanced group classes cost $149 each for six one-hour sessions, or about $24.83 per class. Classes are capped at four dogs.
How much are private lessons at Petco?
Petco sells private lessons in packs: $249 for four 45-minute sessions or $329 for six. New customers can book a single 45-minute Private Lesson 101 for $39.
What age can a puppy start training at Petco?
Petco’s Puppy class takes puppies from 8 to 16 weeks old. Beginner is for dogs from 16 weeks to 6 months, and Fundamentals and Advanced are for dogs 6 months and older. Dogs must meet local vaccination requirements.
Does Petco refund training classes?
Petco gives a full refund up to the start of the second class. After that, you can retake the class for free instead.
Does Petco offer online dog training?
Yes. Petco sells Online Puppy Basics and Online Adult Basics courses for $129 each.

Petco charges the same as PetSmart for in-store training, $149 for a six-week class, but caps each class at four dogs, which is smaller than most chain classes.

How much does dog training at Petco cost?

A standard group class costs $149 for six one-hour sessions, which Petco advertises as “as low as $24.83 per class”. Every group class is the same price; what changes is the dog’s age.

ClassWho it’s forLengthPrice
PuppyPuppies 8–16 weeks6 weeks$149
BeginnerDogs 16 weeks to 6 months6 weeks$149
FundamentalsDogs 6 months and older6 weeks$149
AdvancedDogs 6 months and older6 weeks$149

So what costs $379? Petco’s store directory lists group training “from $149 to $379”, and the directory doesn’t say. We couldn’t find that price on any class listing. We don’t know what it buys, and we’re not going to guess.

Is Petco’s 12-week package worth it?

The 12-week package costs $249. Two separate six-week classes cost $298, so you save $49 and pay about $20.75 a session. If you already know your dog will go on to a second class (Puppy followed by Fundamentals, say), book the package.

How much are private lessons at Petco?

Private lessons run 45 minutes each, for dogs of any age:

OptionPricePer session
Private Lesson 101 (new customers only)$39$39
4 private lessons$249$62.25
6 private lessons$329$54.83

Private Lesson 101 is the cheapest way to try Petco training. At $39 for 45 minutes it costs less than an hour of private training at almost any trainer, though only new customers can book it.

Does Petco offer online training?

Yes. Petco sells two self-paced courses, Online Puppy Basics and Online Adult Basics, at $129 each. They cost less than an in-store class, but nobody watches your dog, and that’s most of what you pay for in person.

What are Petco’s training rules?

Petco refunds a class in full up to the start of the second class. After that, you can retake it free. Dogs must meet local vaccination requirements before the first class; our Petco vaccination prices guide covers the in-store Vetco clinic. Petco also says every trainer completes a 16-week certification program.

How does Petco training compare with PetSmart?

Group class and package prices are identical at both chains: $149 for six weeks, $249 for twelve. PetSmart’s full list is in our PetSmart training prices guide, Petco’s grooming menu is in Petco grooming prices, and every other service is under all pet service prices.

PetcoPetSmart
Class size4 dogs max4–10 dogs
Trying it out$39 first private lessonFree 15-minute consultation, $25 StartSmart workshop
RefundsFull refund until the second classProrated until the second session, plus a free retake within 90 days
Four private lessons$249 for 45-minute sessions$259 for one-hour sessions

That last row is where Petco loses. PetSmart charges a little more for four private lessons, but each one runs a full hour instead of 45 minutes, so per minute PetSmart is the cheaper buy.
