FAQ

How much are dog vaccines?
At Petco’s Vetco and Tractor Supply’s PetVet clinics, individual dog vaccines cost about $38–$66 each in 2026, with no exam fee but a per-pet fee of $5.99–$6. At Banfield, individual vaccines cost $24–$61 but every vaccine visit adds a $74.95–$95.95 office visit in the markets we compared.
How much is a rabies shot for a dog?
A dog rabies vaccine costs $39–$45 at Petco (Vetco, plus a $5.99 fee per pet), $38–$40 at Tractor Supply (PetVet, plus $6 per pet) and $28.41–$32.09 at Banfield, where the required office visit brings the bill to about $103–$128. Shelter and county clinics are often cheaper, from $5 to $25.
How much do puppy shots cost in total?
A full puppy series costs $215 as ShotVet’s Puppy Club at PetSmart, $269 (Chicago) to $299 (New York, Los Angeles) as a Petco Puppy Bundle, and $280–$291 for Tractor Supply’s three puppy visits. The same series at Banfield list prices, with an office visit each time, comes to about $456 in Orlando.
What is the cheapest place to get dog shots?
For routine shots, a low-cost shelter or county clinic is usually cheapest, followed by walk-in chain clinics such as Petco’s Vetco, Tractor Supply’s PetVet and ShotVet at PetSmart, which charge no exam fee. A full-service vet costs more per visit because of the exam, but includes a checkup.
Do vaccine clinics charge an exam fee?
Petco’s Vetco, Tractor Supply’s PetVet and PetSmart’s ShotVet clinics charge no office visit fee, but each adds a small per-pet fee: $5.99 at Vetco, $6 at PetVet (plus $1 per lab test) and $6 at ShotVet. Banfield requires an office visit with every vaccine.

The walk-in clinics at Petco and Tractor Supply charge for the shot plus a small per-pet fee, $5.99 at Petco’s Vetco and $6 at Tractor Supply. Banfield, a full-service vet, lists most individual vaccines at the lowest prices of the three. We compared all three for 2026, plus PetSmart’s ShotVet packages and what low-cost and shelter clinics charge; everything else we price is in all pet service prices.

What does one shot actually cost at the counter?

At Petco and Tractor Supply, the price on the menu is close to what you pay. At Banfield it isn’t. Banfield’s price lists state that all vaccines require an office visit, the fee in the last row of that table.

Bar chart of what one dog rabies shot costs at the counter: $44–$46 at Tractor Supply PetVet and $44.99–$50.99 at Petco Vetco, each including its per-pet fee, and $103.36–$128.04 at Banfield including the office visit

A rabies shot costs $44.99 at Petco in Chicago and $44 at a standard-priced Tractor Supply clinic, each with its per-pet fee. Vetco’s prices also move with your ZIP code; our Vetco prices page has five price tiers. In Orlando, Banfield’s rabies shot is $28.41, the lowest rabies price in the table above. Add the office visit and it comes to $103.36. In San Diego, $128.04. City or county rabies license fees and sales tax are extra everywhere.

How much do puppy shots cost?

Puppies need a series of visits a few weeks apart, bought as a bundle or one visit at a time:

WhereHow it’s soldChicago / standard priceNew York, LA / higher-priced stores
Petco (Vetco)Puppy Bundle, whole series$269$299
Petco (Vetco)Three visits bought separately$303$349
Tractor Supply (PetVet)Three puppy visits, 4 weeks apart$280$291
ShotVet (in PetSmart stores)Puppy Club, three visits$215$215 (one national price)

ShotVet’s Puppy Club is the cheapest series we found. Each provider’s visits include different shots, though, and ShotVet adds its $6 fee per pet, so compare what’s included. Petco’s bundle costs less than its three visits bought separately, so it’s the better buy there if you commit to the whole series up front.

At Banfield’s Orlando list prices, a comparable series (three office visits with DAPP each time, plus rabies, Bordetella and two leptospirosis shots) costs about $456.34. That’s why most Banfield puppies are signed up for a monthly Early Care plan instead; see our Banfield wellness plan cost guide.

What do yearly vaccine packages cost?

For an adult dog’s yearly shots, a clinic package usually beats buying vaccines one by one:

ProviderPackagePriceWhat’s included
Petco (Vetco)Maintenance$145–$159Leptospirosis, Bordetella, heartworm + tick-borne test, dewormer
Petco (Vetco)Complete$149–$165Maintenance plus rabies and 5-in-1
Tractor Supply (PetVet)Vital Health$110–$115For social and outdoor dogs; contents listed at the clinic
PetSmart (ShotVet)Four Paws$155Rabies, DA2PP, deworming, heartworm test
PetSmart (ShotVet)Wild Paws$175Four Paws plus Bordetella or leptospirosis
PetSmart (ShotVet)Pampered Paws$215Four Paws plus more lifestyle vaccines (Bordetella, leptospirosis, flu or Lyme)

Add each clinic’s per-pet fee on top. Petco’s Complete package includes both Bordetella and leptospirosis for less than ShotVet’s Wild Paws, which includes one of the two. PetVet doesn’t itemize its packages online, so ask at the clinic. More on each: Petco vaccination prices, Tractor Supply vet clinic prices and PetSmart vet prices.

Which vaccines does a dog actually need?

Your vet decides the schedule, but the vaccines fall into two groups. The core vaccines are for every dog: rabies, which almost every US state requires by law, and DHPP, which covers distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus. The lifestyle vaccines depend on where your dog goes. Bordetella is required by most boarders, groomers and day-care centers, while leptospirosis, Lyme and canine influenza depend on where you live and how much contact your dog has with other dogs and wildlife.

Budget for the core set every one to three years, and for the lifestyle vaccines as your dog’s routine requires. This page covers prices, not medical advice (how we check our numbers), so ask your vet which vaccines your dog needs.

What do low-cost and shelter clinics charge?

Nonprofit, shelter and county clinics are often the cheapest option. Prices are local, so treat these as examples rather than a national rate:

ClinicLocationPublished price
Miami-Dade Animal ServicesMiami, FL$25 per vaccine (rabies, DHPP or Bordetella); $10 low-income rabies
The Animal FoundationLas Vegas, NVRabies $18; DA2PPV $28; Bordetella $16; canine influenza $35
Texas Coalition for Animal ProtectionTexasDog rabies vaccination $5
Carolina Value Pet CareNorth CarolinaRabies + DHPP + Bordetella package $62
Low Cost Pet VaccinationsDallas–Fort Worth, TXRabies, DHPP, Bordetella and leptospirosis for $59

Many of these clinics run on set days, have income limits for their lowest prices, or require proof of residency. Petco’s charity arm, Petco Love, also lists free and low-cost vaccine events by zip code.

Which option is cheapest for you?

  • One rabies shot and nothing else: a shelter or county clinic if there’s one near you, otherwise Petco’s Vetco or Tractor Supply’s PetVet ($44–$50.99 all in, with the per-pet fee).
  • The yearly set of shots: a clinic package. Petco’s Complete package ($149–$165) and PetVet’s Vital package ($110–$115) bundle several vaccines and a heartworm test for less than buying them one by one. Details are in Petco vaccination prices and Tractor Supply vet clinic prices.
  • Shots plus a checkup: a full-service vet, where the exam is part of the visit anyway. Compare Banfield prices and VCA’s CareClub.
  • A puppy: a clinic puppy bundle (ShotVet’s $215 Puppy Club is the cheapest we found), or a wellness plan if you also want exams and a spay or neuter included.
